Rare earth magnet gun mount – try saying that three times fast!
I know, it’s a bit of a mouthful. The first time I heard of rare earth magnet gun mounts was a few years ago. I was walking through the small town I grew up in during a trip back home to see family when I walked by a couple of guys quietly talking in excited voices.
“I bought a rare earth magnet gun mount the other day.”
“What’s that? Isn’t that a gun magnet?”
“It’s got “neodymium” magnets in it, and you can use it to hide your gun in the house. Under the table, wherever.”
After getting home, I immediately took to Google to find out what a rare earth magnet gun mount was. Half expecting to see some sort of strange, hippy/karmic device, I instead found a rugged looking metal accessory surrounded by some badass guns.
A traditional rare earth magnet gun mount and its friends
The concept was simple. Each rare earth magnet gun mount is equipped with a set of ultra-strong neodymium magnets, thus the shortened name “gun magnet”. Neodymium magnets are the strongest commercially available magnets on the market today. Made from an alloy of boron, iron, and neodymium, manufacturers use them for most products that need strong magnets to operate.
Designed to be secured by screws to any flat surface, you install the rare earth magnet gun mount in your desired hidden location. Once installed, you place your gun against the magnet portion of the gun mount and the neodymium magnets hold it in place.
I’ve always been a very strong advocate for home protection. Over the years, I had relied on my trusty safe and two gun cabinets to safe keep my guns. During the day, I’d keep my concealed carry on me at all times. At night, I’d tuck it away in my safe in case of emergencies.
But when I read about rare earth magnet gun mounts for the first time, home protection turned upside down.
This is a story all about how, my life got flipped-turned upside down
What use would my safe be if an intruder broke into my house while I was in the kitchen? I wouldn’t have time to get to my safe or my gun.
And what if I was in the bedroom and had time to get to my safe? Would I have time to fumble around with the lock, or would the intruder shoot me first?
1…12…5…was that glass breaking?
The safe option was not…safe.
Thus, I immediately turned my attention to gun magnets, filled with questions. What should one look for in a rare earth magnet gun mount? Can a magnet damage gun? After some quick product research, I drove to the local gun store and picked up a gun magnet.
Almost like two eyes
A tiny little thing that barely covered half of my palm, I was convinced I had been taken. How could such a tiny magnet possibly even hold my ultra-lightweight Glock 17? Unthinkable.
What my rare earth magnet gun mount felt like at the time
After getting home, I began inspecting my new rare earth magnet gun mount. The metal shell was made completely of iron, with the back section wrapped in rubber. The rubber prevented the magnet end of the gun magnet from scratching the side of your gun. The sides of the gun mount had holes to screw it into the wall, the side of your bed, your car, etc.
Deciding to put my gun magnet to the test, I placed it on the slide of my father’s 9mm. Immediately, the gun stuck to it with a very strong magnetic grip. Encouraged, I proceeded to lift up the gun magnet with the 9mm comfortably stuck to it, suspending the odd coupling in the air.
After shaking it, bumping it against my refrigerator, and scraping it against the ground, the weapon still stuck securely to the gun magnet like a bee to honey. All my doubts about the sturdiness of the magnetic grip were gone – my biggest fear prior to purchase was the gun magnet not holding up my guns.
On the other hand, I was still able to easily peel the 9mm from the rare earth magnet gun mount without any difficulty. Very useful for accessing your weapon during emergency situations.
I was completely convinced I had found the perfect home protection accessory. My rare earth magnet gun mount could safely store any gun (I was even able to hang my rifle from it), while still allowing me to easily access it without having to type in a code into a safe.
And since installation just involved two screws and a flat surface, I could install the gun magnet anywhere. A rare earth magnet gun mount underneath the kitchen cabinet, behind the door – the applications were truly infinite.
After I flew back home to my wife, I came through the door bearing gifts – a tin of my mother’s apple pie and a five-piece rare earth magnet gun mount set to strategically install and position around the house. My wife (also a gun owner) looked at me incredulously.
“Are you the boy from Home Alone? Don’t tell me this rare earth magnet gun mount thing is your new obsession.”
We had a great laugh about it, but hey – a guy can’t be too cautious, right?
