The side of the radio: one of the most common ways to hide a gun in a car
Driving with your best friend is always nice
This method isn’t the most inconspicuous since anyone approaching your vehicle from the driver’s seat will see your mounted gun. However, it allows you to position your gun very closely to your right hand for easy access during emergencies.
Installation tip: depending on the make of your car, you may have more circuitry on the side of your radio. To avoid poking holes in important things with screws, try using strong 3M tape to secure the gun magnet. If you’re worried about the gun magnet damaging your gun, read why it won’t here.
PROS:
Easy access for right-handers during emergencies
CONS:
In clear line of sight for anyone approaching from the driver’s side
Not good for unattended storage
Beneath the steering wheel: advantages and disadvantages of hiding your gun between your legs
Hey, brake pedal! Freeze!
A close friend of mine first introduced me to this gun magnet installation. The idea is to have the gun magnet installed 8″ or so below the steering wheel of your car. With the gun tucked underneath the wheel and blocked by both knees, it’s hard to spot. However, it’s slightly uncomfortable as the gun juts out and impedes your legs from moving freely while driving.
Installation tip: since the area below the steering wheel generally has open space, you can screw in the gun magnet without hitting any important components.
PROS:
Easy access for both right-handers and left-handers during emergencies
Out of sight – blocked by knees and the steering wheel
CONS:
In order to draw your firearm from the gun magnet, you need to lean forward and downwards. This motion may lead a perp to fire first out of reflex
Since the gun magnet is installed between your legs, the gun blocks your legs from moving too freely
Not suitable for unattended car concealment
The center console: the more versatile, James Bond method of hiding a gun in a car
Peek-a-boo! Gun magnet!
This is the go-to place gun owners hide guns in their cars. It’s versatile, big, and doesn’t require installing a gun magnet. Gun magnet positioning can also vary since you can position the gun magnet/gun on the center console cover, side, and/or bottom. However, such an installation requires opening up the center console in order to access the gun. Thus, accessing your firearm in an emergency is more difficult.
Installation tip: if space is too limited to use screws, use 3M tape to secure the gun magnet.
PROS:
Can be left hidden while unattended
Versatile installation options
CONS:
Makes it hard to access your firearm
The side of the center console: the side piece
The side piece
In this scenario, you install the gun magnet on the driver’s side of the center console. It’s much easier to access during an emergency situation as it is positioned right next to your lap. However, drawing the gun will appear less organic to a perp. It is also exposed – anyone approaching from the driver’s side will see it.
Installation tip: get a low profile gun magnet for this installation, or install the gun magnet higher on the center console. Otherwise, the gun will rub uncomfortably against your leg.
PROS:
Easy access during emergencies
CONS:
Not suitable for unattended storage
Drawing your firearm from the gun magnet in this position is not an organic motion, which may set off the perp
Car door: don’t slam too hard
Don’t mistake me for the handle!
This gun magnet set up is a bit of a fan favorite as well. After installing the gun magnet on the driver’s side door, you’ll be able to attach and draw your firearm at a moment’s notice. However, this installation is on the left side of the driver. Thus, accessing the gun for a right-hander is not quite as easy.
Installation tip: when installing the gun magnet, ensure there is adequate space between the grip of the gun and your door handle. If installed too closely, drawing the gun from the gun magnet may be difficult as your hand may bump against the door handle.
Make sure you leave space to draw the gun
PROS:
Easy to install
Easy to access during emergency situations
CONS:
Drawing your firearm from the gun magnet may require you to lean forward slightly, which may flag an alarm with the perp
Not easy for right-handers to access
Not a suitable set up for leaving the gun unattended in your car
Car door side panel: no gun magnet needed
Also known as putting your gun in the side panel
This concealment method doesn’t require too much work. Since the side panel acts as a pocket, you have both the option of using a gun magnet or simply placing the firearm in the side panel.
Installation tip: depending on space available in the side panel, it may be difficult to screw the gun magnet in. Instead, use strong 3M tape to install it in the panel.
PROS:
Semi-suitable for unattended car concealment
CONS:
Drawing your gun from the gun magnet may require you to lean forward slightly, which may flag an alarm with the perp
This is a popular concealment method among many gun owners, but also an unwieldy option. You install the gun magnet on one of the sides of your car trunk and attach your firearm to the gun magnet. However, with your gun in the trunk of your car, reaching it in time during an emergency situation would be very difficult.
Installation tip: for extra security from thieves, lift up the carpeting in your trunk and hide your gun in the space below (if available).
PROS:
Excellent for unattended firearm concealment
CONS:
Difficult to access during emergency situations
Under Car Seats: where you look for loose change in a used car
Is that a quarter down there?
Like the trunk method, accessing your firearm from this position during an emergency is not easy. However, this is a better longterm method to hide a gun in a car as the area below your car seat is hidden from the view of thieves peering into your vehicle.
Installation tip: installing a gun magnet beneath a car seat is a bit difficult, but not impossible. If possible, look for a solid metal piece to position the gun magnet on, and use 3M tape to mount it in place on the piece.
PROS:
A firearm concealment area easily overlooked by potential thieves
CONS:
Difficult to access during emergencies
Seatback: jammed between the magazines
That’ll make the seat pocket bulge out a bit…
This doesn’t take a gun magnet at all to install. Just slip your gun into the backseat pocket of your car, and you’re good to go.
I know, I know. Those guns aren’t held up by gun magnets, and this isn’t the most inconspicuous way to hide a gun in a car. However, this is hands down my favorite method of vehicular firearm concealment. Since the roof of your car curves forward to meet the windshield, a low profile gun magnet installed close to the sun visor will be undetected from all outside angles.
In a scenario where a perp is approaching your car, you’d casually reach one hand upwards. As this is a very natural motion (adjusting the rearview mirror, sun visor, etc.), no one will think twice. However, your hand will then be positioned to draw the gun from the gun magnet hidden on the roof in a very organic motion. This allows you to smoothly draw the weapon and defend yourself (and your family) in times of need.
Installation tip: when positioning your gun on the gun magnet, point the barrel towards the direction of the window on your non-dominant hand’s side. For example, for right-handers, point the barrel towards the driver side window. This allows you to draw the gun quicker since the grip would be positioned on the right-hand side.
PROS:
Easy access for emergencies on the road
CONS:
Not suitable for unattended car concealment
Underneath the car: for long-term emergency concealment
Lots of room for some guns
As you can tell from the picture, there is a lot of room beneath a car to hide a gun. With this gun magnet installation, you are able to conceal both handguns and larger firearms.
Installation tip: you probably don’t want to drill into the bottom of your car – totally understandable. You thus have two options: 1) use 3M tape to install the gun magnet, or 2) simply place the gun magnet on the slide/stock of your gun and put it against a magnetic portion on the bottom of the car. When needed, you would reach below the car and draw the gun, taking the gun magnet along with it.
Behind the radio: your personal vehicular gun safe
Hey, when did that get there?
This one is a bonus – and no gun magnet is required! If you watch HotDayPleatherSeats’ video on how to remove a car radio, you’ll see a small area below where the radio goes in at around 1:45. This is a perfect place to hide a smaller sized gun in your car for longterm concealment – barring searches made by very determined thieves, this is the most secure way to hide a gun in a car.
Installation tip: on top of being a great place to hide a gun in a car, this is also a good place to store emergency cash, credit cards, etc.
PROS:
Hides your gun completely out of sight
CONS:
Impossible to access quickly during emergency situations
Your next move as a gun owner
