When it comes to hiding guns at home, a popular option that gun owners’ often think about is gun concealment furniture. With all the spring-loaded, secret compartment-equipped gun concealment furniture on the market today, it’s quite a tempting choice. One gun owner, ni82156, even posted on Reddit’s CCW subreddit requesting help on his gun storage furniture search:
As you may have read in our previous post, finding different ways to hide a gun at home is crucial to your home protection. In an ideal world, you would home carry at all times. However, carrying a gun around the house isn’t always possible due to individual circumstances/preferences.
Other firearm storage options like gun safes are often used instead, allowing gun owners to keep their firearms under lock and key – secure storage, but very low accessibility. This leads to many gun owners simply leaving their guns on the table/the fridge for the sake of convenience.
And on the other end of the spectrum, there lie the gun owners who prefer more discrete methods like gun magnets and gun concealment furniture.
Your classic gun concealment table
With the Men In Black fantasy of pressing a button and having guns pop out from behind the wall, gun concealment furniture can be very attractive.
Every gun owner’s wet dream…
However, I’ve found that gun storage furniture is not the best route to go for many concealment situations, with gun magnets often times being a more practical way to hide a gun at home. I’ve laid out my reasoning in 6 different sections below – let’s get started!
From left to right: Tactical Walls, Rough Country Rustic Furniture, Liberty Home Concealment
As you can see, the cheapest option available across all three companies starts at $399.99. While these pieces are very well made, paying hundreds of dollars for them makes quite a large dent in your pocketbook.
For smaller gun storage furniture pieces like gun storage shelves and concealed gun lamps, you’ll find less expensive prices.
That is quite a badass lamp, though
However, you’ll still be paying upwards of $94, depending on what you’re looking for – not exactly a “buy and forget” kind of purchase.
Lack of Space
Another obstacle that many gun owners encounter with gun concealment furniture is the lack of space to place certain larger units such as hidden gun bookcases.
Here are my books…and my guns
While many gun concealment furniture designs are very ergonomic (guns drawers beneath beds, gun drawers in bookcases), the overall size of the furniture often prevents gun owners from purchasing due to lack of space at home. The size of the gun and number of guns also play roles here – for people who just own a single handgun for concealed carry or home protection, buying a large gun concealment table to conceal doesn’t always make sense.
Lack of Accessibility
Lack of quick firearm accessibility also makes gun concealment furniture less optimal for hiding a gun at home.
The additional key turn adds time, especially if the key isn’t already in the lock
Many gun storage furniture pieces have locks for security and childproofing. However, fumbling around with locks also adds more time needed to access your firearms. If an intruder breaks into your house, that extra time spent opening your gun concealment table greatly affects your ability to react quickly to the threat at hand.
Also, as individual101 outlines below, drawing a gun from a gun concealment drawer is slower due to the lack of spacing available to grab the handle of the gun.
Whenever a product hits the market with a high price tag, DIY project tutorials always emerge behind it for resourceful users to make the product on their own. I’m sure you’ve seen many DIY gun concealment furniture projects and/or other DIY firearm accessory projects online. While these walkthroughs are very entertaining, they aren’t always the most feasible to follow through with.
Admittedly, a very good design
Some major reasons for why DIY gun concealment furniture isn’t always easy to make:
the time and energy investment in making the piece is large
the tools and parts needed to complete the project are not always readily available
the viewer’s woodshop skills may not be advanced enough
there isn’t enough space at home to install the furniture anyway
PS: if you want to see a really cool DIY gun concealment shelf, check out The King of Random’s How to Make the Stealth Shelf video. The craftsmanship is absolutely stunning and the magnetic LED light strip is just class. And if you ever get around to making one after watching the video, do let me know in the comment section and I’ll give you a round of applause.
What’s a good substitute? Gun magnets
If:
your budget is smaller
your space at home is limited
you want quick access to your guns
you don’t want to build a gun concealment furniture piece from scratch
…but you still are looking to hide a gun at home, then your best bet is investing in a gun magnet.
The other option: gun magnets
Every gun magnet is equipped with screws and/or 3M tape for you to attach to any flat surface. Thus, anywhere at home where you are able to hide a gun, you are also most likely able to install a gun magnet.
If you have a coffee table where you want to hide a gun at home, you can install your gun magnet beneath your existing table without needing to buy an entire gun concealment coffee table.
If you have shelves at home with empty cavities beneath them, you can install a gun magnet within the cavity and conceal your gun underneath.
This greater flexibility allows you to control and customize your home protection – more so than what you are able to do with set-in-stone gun concealment furniture. And since gun magnets are so small, you don’t run into space limitations either. Accessing your firearm is easier as well – you simply draw the gun off the gun magnet without having to open any drawers or fumble with locks.
Lastly, gun magnets generally don’t cost more than $20 per magnet mount. Thus, you don’t end up breaking the bank spending hundreds of dollars like you would with gun storage furniture.
So should you buy gun concealment furniture to hide a gun at home?
Like most questions in life, the answer is: “it depends”.
It depends on your needs and current home protection set up. If you have more space available to hide a gun at home and a bigger budget, buying gun concealment furniture does make sense.
However, if you just own a handgun and are looking for a place to store it securely while still having quick access to it, it makes more sense to just buy a gun magnet instead. And if you’re afraid of your gun magnet magnetizing your gun, click here to find out why that won’t happen.
Don’t get me wrong – gun concealment furniture is great. It adds a level of sophistication to firearm concealment that can’t be achieved even with gun magnets. Pressing a button and having a gun tray slide out of your coffee table? That’s absolutely badass. And the level of craftsmanship put into many of these products is simply top notch – they’ll run you a pretty penny, but will look damn good while doing it.
But again – it depends on what you need. Let us know what you choose to go with in the comment section below!

Price
Over the years, exorbitantly high prices have strongly deterred me from buying gun concealment furniture. For example, let’s take a look at Tactical Walls, Liberty Home Concealment, and Rough Country Rustic Furniture‘s gun concealment coffee table offerings.
